Korean Alphabet at Play : Yamin Textese of Homoglyphic Syllable Reconstruction
본 논문은 한글 문자를 수정하여 만든 텍스트 기반 온라인 변형어인 야민정음의 조합 형태와 기능을 영어의 텍스트 기반 변형어인 영어 리트(Leet)와 비교 분석한 연구이다. 한국어의 야민 정음도 리트(Leet)와 마찬가지로(예, Have vs. HAv3) 그룹 내부 구성원들간의 결속 및 소통을 위해 개발된 인터넷 텍스트 언어로서 그룹 정체성과 유희적 기능을 위해 개발되었다는 공통점 을 공유하면서도, 여타의 텍스트 기반 온라인 언어와는 달리 본래의 문자를 새로운 문자 조합으 로 분해하여 재구성하는 파격적인 전략을 채택하여 단어의 음성적 변화를 일으키는 독특한 특 징을 지니고 있다. 이러한 이유로, 야민정음은 기존 자소와 비슷한 모양의 기호나 숫자로 대체 하는 자소 대 자소 교체 전략을 채택하여 음성적 변이를 일으키지 않는 리트 및 다른 알파벳 변 형어와는 변형 원리와 인식 방법이 근본적으로 다르다. 이는 선형적으로 자소를 일렬로 배열하 는 알파벳류의 문자와는 달리, 한글이 음절 단위의 자소 배열 규칙을 채택하며 이로 인해 시각적 단어 인식에 음절 경로라는 추가적인 처리 경로를 제공하기 때문에 가능하다. 또한 추가적 음절 인식 경로는 문자와 음성 형태의 중대한 변화에도 불구하고 야민정음의 의사소통 기능을 가능 하게 한다. 음절 단위의 자소 배열과 처리 경로는 선형 배열의 1차원 문자와는 달리 시각적 2차 원 공간을 제공하여 창의적인 이미지 구성과 상이한 음성 효과를 제공함으로써 표준 철자 단어 에 추가적인 의미와 표현력을 부가하여, 타이핑 가능한 “그래피콘”의 기능을 수행할 수 있는 새 로운 문화어의 역할을 가능하게 한다.
야민정음의 문자 유희 : 동형 음절 재구성의 단어 인식 및 효과
This study investigates Yamin Cengeum, a text-based online language variant of Korean created by orthographic modifications of Korean alphabet, Hangeul. While sharing the commonality as an internet textese developed for playful in-group communication, Korean Yamin is unique in taking a drastic reconstruction strategy of decomposing the original letters into new letter combinations, resulting in phonetic changes of the word. As such, it differs from other alphabetic language varieties such as Leet of English, which takes the letter-to-letter substitution strategy of replacing the existing alphabet graphemes with similar-looking alternatives (e.g. HAv3 for have). I argue that the alpha-syllabic orthographic convention of Korean, distinct from linear alphabetic scripts, provides an additional processing route to visual word recognition while offering two-dimensional space for liberal visual experiments. Due to the adoption of the homoglyphic syllable reconstruction strategy, Yamin maintains its communicative function despite significant alterations in graphemic and phonetic forms, which further enables the Yamin texts to serve as typable “graphicons.” (Ewha Womans University)
