The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of 'political subject', focusing on the way of life and role shown in a refugee's life experience. To this end, the researcher paid attention to the life experience of Chakma R, a strategist and human rights activist of the JPNK. For data collection, 5 times face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with the research participants. For data analysis, Mandelbaum's 'dimensions', ‘turnings’, and ‘adaptations’ were used as text analysis frameworks. As a result of the study, the meaning of 'political subject' is, 1) at the individual level is to recover the source of nature, love, and dreams and to resist being subjugated/ruled by exclusive nationalism, 2) at the community level, through internal solidarity and expansion into civil society It is the power to expand the fragmentary perception of refugees into an open understanding by raising issues of minority autonomy and human rights issues of refugees. 3) Socially level, it drives meaningful change in society by participating as an equal subject in civil society.
It is the will to do it and the practice. The researcher hopes that this study will serve as an opportunity for Korean civil society to break away from the existing negative refugee discourse and look at refugees as beings with political subjectivity.
